good morning, america. this morning, the never-before-seen dramatic moment cleveland police break through the door of the house of horrors to rescue two of the women held hostage there for a decade. the sinking subdivision. the earth gobbling up houses. people who live there panicking and fleeing. what is causing this slow-motion disaster? and can it be stopped? dribble diplomacy. ex-nba star, dennis rodman is planning his second trip to north korea. find out what he wants his friend, kim jong-un to do. and why is he lashing out at president obama? and the teenage girl who loves twitter and hates to have her tv shows ruined. so, now, she's made an app for that. this morning, we meet the inventor of twivo.

good morning, everybody. we want to start with a big mother's day shoutout to all the moms in the audience. all four of our moms, and our favorite in-house mom, bianna golodryga, the mother of 1-year-old jake. did you get breakfast at bed at 4:00 in the morning when you woke up this morning? >> no. but i did just receive a text from 13-month-old jake. he said, yo, mom, love you. i'm going to go crawl now. and happy mother's day. love jake. >> very advanced. >> very talented. >> can we get mensa on the line? >> we're so proud of him. go, mom. we have plenty of fun on this mother's day. including tips for dads on what mom really wants on this day. a hint -- it's not things you can run out to the store and purchase. we'll give you expert advice how to make this day and many more very special. sometimes it's easier to go out and buy things.

>> some of the gifts are elaborate and require commitment. we'll tell you about that. coming up, it's not a mother's day story. but it requires a certain amount of femininity. why is billionaire richard branson dolled up and working as a flight attendant? not pretty. we will tell you in a minute. >> leave it to richard branson. right? we begin with the brand-new footage of the dramatic moment when police in cleveland broke through the door and rescued two women who had been held for more than a decade. alex perez is in cleveland with more. alex? >> reporter: good morning, bianna. that video lasts only about 30 seconds. but it is our first glimpse of how chaotic the scene was here when amanda berry decided she and the others would no longer be prisoners. for the first time, this morning, we're seeing the dramatic moments when cleveland police officers pried open the front door of ariel castro's home, freeing gina dejesus and michelle knight. the rescue, caught on cell phone

video, shows officers rushing in and pounding down the door. >> yeah. they were like in a rush to see, to find out what was going on. oh, [ bleep ]. >> reporter: it all unfolds just moments after amanda berry and her 6-year-old daughter escape. according to ashley, the mother and daughter can be seen here embracing in the middle of the street. >> she kept holding the cop, with her daughter like this. and she was telling the cop, keep me safe. keep me protected. >> reporter: this is the first mother's day in ten years, amanda, gina and michelle are at home and free. it's the gift their mothers spent the last decade dreaming about. those desperate pleas when they were missing, still fresh. >> some days, just not knowing. >> reporter: this weekend, mothers marching, vowing to never forget what happened behind these walls. meanwhile, investigators are firing back at allegations they

may have missed clues over the years. commander gary gingell handled the case from the start. and said every tip was investigated. >> everything was checked out. whether it was something we checked out before. we got it again, we checked it out again. >> reporter: and gina dejesus and her family will celebrate this mother's day with some of their favorites. on the menu, corn beefed hash empanadas and ground beef stuffed potato balls. dan? >> well-deserved long overdue celebration for that family. our thoughts are with that family today. alex perez, thank you for your reporting this morning. now, to a neighborhood that is being swallowed by the earth. an entire subdivision where the homes are crumbling. neighbors being told to pack up and leave. and abc's gio benitez has the story. >> i don't know what to think. everything goes flying. >> reporter: this morning, residents and officials in one northern california town are mystified, desperately tried to

figure out what's caused seven homes to be swallowed up by the earth. >> it has grown, you know, substantially from the time i saw it earlier this week, to present. so, things are still happening. >> reporter: just look at this home. the ground giving way, causing the house to drop ten feet. destroying most of it. the seemingly sudden sinkage is leaving residents feeling like they're losing it all. >> the stress level is a little bit high, you might say. you see everything you worked so hard for. just literally crumbled. >> reporter: what started as small cracks in the ground, gradually opened to small canyons. >> all of the cracks in the roadway seem to have gotten bigger. >> reporter: quickly engulfing some homes and stripping some homes down to the core. now, the entire community of 29 homes is at risk of collapsing. >> it's metastasizing, like cancer. it's spreading out. there's new cracks showing up in areas of the subdivision that weren't affected before. >> reporter: why are the homes sinking? water bubbling up to the surface

may have something to do with it. officials fixed broken pipes last week. but nobody knows why there's so much water. right now, multiple causes are under investigation. >> i think they're talking about a lot of broken dreams and uprooted lives at this point. >> reporter: uprooted lives, indeed. to add to the mystery, there's also a dormant volcano in the area. and at least one public works employee says he believes many of the problems there are caused by the volcano. scientists are looking at all of this right now. dan and bianna? >> caused by a volcano. bizarre. gio, thank you. let's get to ron claiborne with a look at the developing stories making headlines. >> yo, mom. good morning to you bianna and dan. good morning, everyone. we begin with breaking news out of trenton, new jersey. a standoff between a gunman and police that began last friday ended just a short while ago. state police say the situation, in their words, has been resolved. the suspect is in custody. and the three children being held hostage, they are now safe. police were called to the home after reports the man had

barricaded himself inside. and this heartbreaking story out of california. a 12-year-old boy is under arrest. 12 years old. charged with the stabbing death of his younger sister. and sending police on a wild goose chase for a made-up suspect. abc's john schriffen has this story. >> reporter: this morning, a family still grieving the murder of 8-year-old leila fowler, now has to deal with the news that authorities believe their 12-year-old son killed his own sister. >> police have arrested leila's 12-year-old brother on the charges of homicide. >> reporter: on april 27th, this quiet community outside sacramento was rocked when little lei larks's brother told police he found her body stabbed to death after a man broke into their home. >> you wouldn't expect something like this to happen. >> reporter: the boy's description sparked a massive manhunt. police telling neighbors to be on the lookout for this mysterious man. after 15 days spent knocking on more than 300 doors, even using divers to search through local

reservoirs for clues, authorities now say there was no intruder. and they have charged leila's older brother with homicide. >> citizens of calveras county can sleep a little better tonight. >> reporter: investigators are not saying what led them to suspect the brother. and they are not answering questions. the children's parents are not available for comment this morning. for "good morning america," john schriffen, abc news, new york. nasa is keeping a close eye on the international space station to make sure a rare unscheduled spacewalk to repair an ammonia leak got the job done. astronauts had to replace a pump. they believe the problem was -- nasa officials say the crew was never in any danger. and o.j. simpson is expected to appear in a las vegas courtroom tomorrow, hoping to overturn his conviction for armed robbery and kidnapping. simpson is serving a sentence of up to 33 years in prison. his current legal team says the last attorneys were so incompetent, that simpson deserves freedom and a new trial. and finally, say this about richard branson.

the man does make good on his bets. the british billionaire, check it out. he shaved his legs, put on lipstick and dressed up as a flight attendant after losing a wager to an airline owner over a formula 1 race, between their two formula s. branson joked that his drivers are no longer employed. and he not only dressed up, as you saw. but he worked the flight from perth, australia, to kuala lumpur in malaysia. six hours. so, it was more than just masquerading. >> the goatee is a bit of an impediment to -- >> he looked pretty without the goatee. i think. >> you think so? >> mother's day, she's feeling more generous than most. >> yo, mom. >> thanks, ron. we're going to turn to basketball hall of famer turned unlikely diplomat of sorts. dennis rodman, the flamboyant former nba star, is planning a second visit to north korea. this time he's hoping his new friend, the 29-year-old communist dictator who rules the

country with an iron fist, will free an american jailed there. abc's reena ninan has details from washington. good morning, reena. >> reporter: good morning to you. flamboyant, you're right. dennis rodman, he doesn't disappoint when it comes to being provocative. and this time, he has some harsh words for president obama, as he plans some freelance diplomacy for a potential august trip to north korea. he's back! >> obama can't do [ bleep ]. >> reporter: harsh words for president obama on this rant on tmz.com. where former nba star, dennis rodman, vented about the president's foreign policy toward north korean leader kim jong-un. >> we have a black president. how about that one? >> reporter: rodman, who visited the communist nation in 2013, is planning a return trip in august. this time, rodman says, he's on a mission, a mission he feels president obama can't get done. >> obama can't do [ bleep ]. i don't know why he won't do

it, but do that for us. >> reporter: rodman, hoping to bring home 44-year-old korean-american kenneth bay, recently sentenced to 15 years hard labor in north korea, after being accused of smuggling anti-government propaganda into the country. >> it's going to be difficult because i think it's -- his nationality is close. like his background. >> reporter: after rodman's 2013 trip, the basketball star turned international man of diplomacy, drew controverublic praise of kim jong-un, during this interview with george stephanopoulos. >> he's a great guy. he is a great guy. >> reporter: now rodman is reaching out to un via twitter, asking a man he calls a friend, saying do me a solid and cut kenneth bay lose. rodman even gives credit to un for another solid, dialing down recent tensions on the korean peninsula. at least kim will do one thing. he took the missiles back. thank you. >> reporter: a u.s. official tells me they are calling for the north koreans to grant bay amnesty. they're also in touch with his family. dan?

>> we did research on google this morning. this is the first time do me a solid, has been used in american diplomacy, since the founding of the republic. reena, thank you. >> you bet. let's bring in abc's martha raddatz, our chief global affairs correspondent, sitting in for george stephanopoulos on "this week." martha, good morning to you. what are your sources in the white house and america's national security apparatus think about rodman's diplomacy? >> well, a lot of new diplomatic phrases, we've heard, never been heard before. last time he went over there, as soon as he got back, kim jong-un threatened to launch the missiles. we had a diplomatic crisis for months. so, i don't think dennis rodman did much good last time. of course, everybody is hoping that the american is released, if dennis rodman can do something towards that end, that's great. but nobody is counting on it. >> he'll be judged on his results. let me switch topics. as the controversy over that attack on the american outpost in benghazi gets more intense, what's the potential fallout for hillary clinton, the former

secretary of state that may run for president in 2016? >> that's so far away. but it will certainly be something that people will look at. it may be far away, 2016. but this could very likely follow her into a presidential race, if she decides to run. especially those e-mails that were altered. no one is saying hillary clinton altered those e-mails and took out references to al qaeda. but, boy, they're going to look at that. >> this may dog her for months, perhaps longer. martha raddatz, thank you. and martha has a big show this morning. senators john mccain and jack reed will debate benghazi. that's later this morning. martha raddatz in for george stephanopoulos in for "this week." we're going to turn, now, to prince harry's headlinemaking tour of america. the always colorful royal is helping kicking off the warrior games for wounded service members in colorado. he'll spend another day in the rockies before heading back to tour damage from last year's superstorm sandy in new jersey. and abc's rachel smith has the story.

>> reporter: prince harry and olympic gold medal swimmer, missy franklin, joined together to light the torch saturday at the warrior games. a paralympic competition for wounded vets. u.s. and uk armed forces. harry, a twice-deployed captain in the british army air corps, got in on the game, as well. or at least attempted. >> he not only served his country, he served his supporters. he came half way across the world. but he's here to support us. he came halfway across the world to come over here and pay tribute to the veterans. >> reporter: the colorado festivities, marked a string of events. he was compelled to do more than the traditional publicity appearances. >> a year ago i was in washington on the ambassador's lawn. and planted a tree. that's what most of our family do nowadays. >> reporter: harry met with the athletes before the competition. >> i think he was quite down to earth.

i was so nervous actually. >> reporter: earlier in the week, the 28-year-old made the rounds on capitol hill. even attended a white house event, hosted by first lady michelle obama and dr. jill biden, honoring military mothers. he boosted morale of those injured at walter reed medical center and paid respects to the fallen at arlington national cemetery. the prince will take in more events today at the warrior games. then, he has stops scheduled in new york city and new jersey, with just enough time to squeeze in a round of polo. then, heading his african-based charity in connecticut. bianna? >> speaking in television terms, i say he has a high cute factor. >> for sure. >> people like him. time to check the weather and over to ginger zee, who also has a high cute factor. >> thank you. cold mother's day. people are going to want to turn that off. kansas city this morning, 35 degrees. that's a record. international falls fell to one at 22 degrees. it's cold and has been minnesota. the springtime in

then, they had wind. yesterday, so strong, it did this. look. >> this is crazy. look at this. >> see that white? that's all ice, crawling up towards the house. actually, a row of homes. they said it sounded like breaking glass. eventually it did break glass. it went into the houses and windows and through the walls. the wind pushing all that. overnight, we have brand-new pictures of what it looked like from above. just walls and sheets of ice. so, will they get any warmer? the answer is, yes. maybe this is a mother's day gift for you. you're going to see melting with the ice. and any left on the lake. look at minneapolis by tuesday. 58 today. 91 by tuesday. chicago gets to 85. kansas city, 90 by the midweek. so, yesterday new york city, it was very stormy. we saw some trees down. and wires. all of that kind of action going on. very heavy rain briefly. today, that's going to move off to the north and east, leaving

this one, as you see, as a twist, literally. we'll freeze this video and show you how things turned out coming up in "fixation." >> that's too tame for ginger zee. we're going to start with a twisted and bizarre murder of aspiring actress and model. prosecutors say it was a hit carried out by somebody who is described as a female james bond. >> the suspect is about to go on trial. but the person who allegedly ordered the killing is out of the country and out of reach of law. abc's akiko fujita has the story. >> reporter: this morning, 47-year-old accused murderer, kelly soo park, remains free on $3.5 million bail. but that freedom may be temporary, as jury selection is set to begin on monday for park's long-awaited trial, facing murder charges. she's charged with killing model juliana redding in an alleged murder-for-hire plot. 21-year-old redding moved from arizona with hollywood dreams. landing a spread in "maxim" magazine. a small role in an independent movie. >> i don't really want to do it. >> reporter: two years after

beginning her modeling and acting career, redding was found strangled and beaten to death in her santa monica home. prosecutors say park worked for for dr. munir uwaydah. uwaydah and redding's dad reportedly were in a business deal. but greg jennings pulled out of the deal just days before his daughter's murder. prosecutors say uwaydah bragged about park. calling her a female james bond. he could rely on to take care of business. court documents say they used threats, intimidation and bullying, acting as the doctor's debt collector. and court documents show that prosecutors show park alleged to receive a $250,000 payment weeks before redding was killed. the doctor has never been charged. dna evidence linked park to the crime, according to investigators. defense lawyers argue the real killer is juliana redding's boyfriend, john gilmore. >> they're trying to point the finger at gilmore, saying he

had, at one time allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend. >> reporter: but investigators cleared gilmore as a suspect, insisting he had several alibis. experts say the defense will likely bring up other persons of interest, as they fight for park's freedom. park will be free to enter and leave the courtroom and walk anywhere she'd like because she's free on bail. and legal analysts say that could work in her favor. that image, they say, is likely to create a better impression on jurors. dan and bianna? >> akiko, thank you. twisted and bizarre, the accurate adjectives for that case. the trial starting tomorrow. we'll stay on it. now, we'll check the other overnight headlines. and for that, mr. ron claiborne. >> good morning, everyone. in the news, new video shows the moment that cleveland police burst into that house of horrors where three women had been held captive for a decade. the women are now out of the hospital. their accused captor, ariel castro, is behind bars. more than two dozen people have been killed in a mine explosion in china.

108 miners were underground when a blast occurred. china's mines are said to be the deadliest in the world. an emotional scene at boston's fenway park. heather abbott, who lost a leg in the boston marathon bombings, threw out a pitch at the red sox game yesterday. she is getting the hang of the crutches and is once again wearing the high heels she loves. and finally, happy birthday to the man who has seen it all. richard overton of texas turned 107 years old yesterday. the world war ii vet still mows his lawn every weekend and goes to dairy queen after church on sunday. they'll be expecting him later today. he also has his driver's license, originally issued in 1942. >> he looks fantastic. >> you think the picture would change a little bit in the last 70 years. but maybe not. think about it. time, now, for the weather and ginger zee. >> breaking the coats out on this mother's day in chicago. one of the coldest mother's days they will have in over a decade. but it looks nice.
